is anything applied to the skin to clean the ink during tattooing or is it just a cloth artists use?

It depends on the artist, but typically while tattooing, he/she will wipe away excess ink with antibacterial soap water mix OR they use what is called Green Soap.

i got a tattoo and my artist drew on me with a pen and a sharpie then he started tattooing he used a moisturizing lotion as he was working on it
