Difference between move off hard drive and delete?

Ok. Now I know when you shift+del a file, the system simply adds a character to the beginning of the file. But, if you move a file off the hard drive to another place (USB, etc), is the file permanently deleted from the original location?

I know it's not copied and the original file deleted because copying takes longer.

When you MOVE a file, it's the same as COPY and then DELETE. The file WILL still reside on your hard drive until it is overwritten sometime down the road.

When doing a direct COPY (Vista to Win8) it does tend to take longer for SMALLER files to COPY than to MOVE due to indexing and System Restore updates. (COPY doesn't update Restore and doesn't require additional indexing whereas MOVE does.)

To physically delete the file from the hard drive, a free-space "secure erase" app is needed.

    Hope this helps!
