Bobby's answer above may be applicable to Stalin years (torture etc...) - such mantras mentioning "torture" and "Siberia" of Stalin years while talking about USSR of 1960-80-s makes such opinions negligible and stupid....Ofcource in Soviet Union of 1980-s there was no "torture" and also separatist moovement was in minority (elites in republics though wanted to become REAL presidents and heads of REAL states, not just provincial governors which they were as heads of soviet republics, thats true),...
The main reason of USSR collapse was economic difficulties that resulted from wrong communist theory stating that free market and private enterprenership/private business was wrong and should be prohibited - that resulted in economic dificulties, unrest in society and disability of Central Government to controll situation - hence activisation of separatism to topple central government...If Central Government and Communist Party didn't resist reforms then Soviet Union would not have collapsed by now - only Baltic states would have separated for sure as there separatism was indeed strong, but not in other republics...

They tried to keep up with the U.S. When it came to army spending and their economic system might control it. Their two alternatives have been to try and hold up and threat fiscal fall down, or recognize they couldn't hold up and allow the us to be the lone and overwhelming tremendous vigour in the world. They selected #1 and it lead to their cave in. The thing that is wrong with their economic climate is the fact that everything was once owned and operated by way of the federal government and they had no approach to make any money. Like in the united states we now have exclusive corporations that may make our military apparatus and for any sum of money we spend the government will get 10% back in taxes, the money given to them will probably be spent to purchase the presents needed which is a method they make more cash and broaden the dimensions of the economic climate, and this also stimulates the economic system. The soviets lost money on every transaction because they used the money to fund the assignment, they owned the factory so that they had no manner to make any cash with the creation. The fact that they have been additionally a communist country harm them as well. Democratic international locations didn't need to buy anything from them if they had a alternative. The Soviets most effective solution to make any money was to invade and take more land however they understood that doing that will begin a battle. So the containment coverage of the united states choked them to dying.

Repression: The Soviet Union was a communist dictatorship that used torture to suppress dissidents and sent political opposition to Siberia. The result was unhappy masses.
Economic woes: Communism goes against the basis of human nature. Greed is a quality we all have in some form and money is power. By going against the Soviet Union and the entire Eastern Bloc ended with poor conditions and was in constant financial woes.
Nationalism: The Soviet Union consisted of over a dozen different nationalities and many of them longed to form their own countries. During the fall of communism many protest demanding their own country with no intent on saving the Soviet Union.
