Linux for servers because it's free and there is a huge knowledge base / supportive community of users and a wealth of free server applications available.
Windows for desktops because of high compatibility with commercial applications and games.

I had a great time as quickly as I had an account 5 years in the past on a server working solar Solaris. It only worked. i've got considering found that OpenSolaris is extra of a discomfort than its worth. i've got been fidgeting with Gentoo considering my Niece's husband gave me an previous laptop with it loaded on. it is so previous i've got extra or much less retired it, I put in it final summer season right into a clean laptop, then it broke, (occurs) and that i eventually reinstalled it as a twin boot with Slackware (my first actual Linux, it occurs) and that i'm falling in love with Slackware back (although i myself quite like Gentoo a lot. i'm going to boot on the two the two). i've got only reinstalled Synfig (which I hate) and that i'm installation Blender specifically so i can play with the slackbuild documents and watch the courses being outfitted from scratch. Least renowned? Any abode windows before XP, because of the fact they crashed a lot, or Vista, which i won't be able to even tell while it crashes because of the fact it is so slo-ow.

My favourite for desktops has to be OS X. It is VERY user-friendly, and it is so easy to use.
For servers, Linux.
