Is saying "Man U" abusive? A friend got hunted down like a sheep in a forest for saying it!?

Is the term abusive? I see it used so often here

    Some Man Utd fans don't like it as it as some supporters used the "U" as meaning "you" after the munich disaster there were chants such as man u never intended coming him which if you take the first letters of each word spells munich.

    Most people just say man u as a shorter way of saying man utd

    No, it's just short for Man United, which is short for Manchester United (of course).

    They've been known as Man U since way back.
