In the 1940s, as they started to push the Germans back into Germany following the battle of Stalingrad. They did most of the dirty work against the Nazi armies. Subsequent events helped them stay on par with the US, such as the development of nuclear weapons and so on.

The Soviet Union was already a military superpower before WW2. The Axis was formed to counter the Communist parties in The Soviet Union and China. The Soviet Union also had more troops in Europe than the U.S. by a large margin even after the Soviet Union took heavy losses.

After WW II, many countries in Europe were left to rebuild themselves. Soviet (and the U.S.), on the other hand, had already started building up its military/infrastructures since during WW II, and it had also taken control of many Eastern European Countries after the war. Therefore, I would say that Soviet Union (and U.S) became a "superpower" shortly after WW II.

the Soviet Union has tested their nuclear bomb on 8/29/1949 just 4 years after WW2 ended. since that time they started turning a superpower.

Same like the US (After WW2)

The US had took "irrlevant" (on global stage) losses...

And Russia (while taking heavy losses, still won the war in europe).

The european powers pretty much self destructed in WW2 so there was a power vacum.

(Btw.the EU is working to shift all power to europe back again ;)

properly after it became presented. bear in mind that u.s. became extremely only the former Tsarist Empire with renovations. once the modernized and industrialized they got here into direct conflict with the powers of Europe. WWI decreased ecu potential and at the same time as us of a and u.s. really sat it out it all started up back as WWII. In WWII the U.S. became in touch and us of a joined in too. WWII became the shortcoming of existence of the British and German Empires really, yet some thing else of the ecu empires collapsed too.
