Why can't Liberals be Christians?

I'm a Libertarian and grew up in a Liberal family. I am a very firm believer in Christ and have a relationship with the Lord... Yet, when I tell people my political party, I very regularly get a response that I am a bad Christian or not really a Christian. I do mission work regularly, I always try my hardest to forgive and to show Christ's love, I read my bible, I pray, I go to church, and most importantly, I have a relationship with Christ. So why do people keep telling me I can't be a Christian?

Update:

I want serious answers, please

Update 2:

Goofy Girl, it matters to me because my faith in Christ is a very central part of who I am.

Update 3:

MoorToo, I am very well educated, actually.

Update 4:

Keith, I obviously don't agree with you that this is an imaginary relationship... but I respect your opinion and thank you for respecting mine.

Update 5:

es 70, I never said that salvation came through works. I have been saved and am firm in my faith. The question is, why can't I be a Libertarian at the same time? Or, why can't another Christian be a Liberal? (to clarify - I'm a Libertarian myself, but have Liberal Christian family members and have been told by people that you can't be a Christian and be part of either party)

Being a Christian isn't a matter of any works, though. In the Bible it says that someone is saved if they confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in their heart that God has raised Him from the dead. (Romans 10:9) So that means Jesus should be our Lord, and we also need to truly believe that God has raised Him from the dead, and that these two things are needed for salvation. Do you believe God resurrected Jesus, that He is the only way to God, and that He should be our Lord in everything? The Bible is God's Word, which tells us what God requires of us. Do you believe it's all God's Word that you need to follow? Those are most important questions. I was liberal and a Christian for a long time in my life myself, but I no longer am because I do follow what the Bible says.

oh it just comes down to what people see as "typical" christian beliefs and mentality - and there is undoubtedly a higher percentage of conservative Christians in the general populus than there are liberal Christians - depending on which part of the country you live in. Perhaps you just live in a more conservative area and people have a narrow view of what you "SHOULD" think or believe.... typical human behavior.

Doesn't really matter what they think, what's important that you actually see how their discrimination is harmful. All you have to do is be a good person, that's it.

I don't know how an imaginary relationship is the most important thing in your life, but to each their own...something they are failing to understand.

Ha wow those people are stupid. I am a christian and a liberal, and I know tons of very strong Christians who are liberals. Political theology has nothing to do with your religion...

You can be liberal and a Christian. Those that do not believe so, have a very narrow point of view. You are allowed to ignore their opinion.

    Peace and Namaste!

Check out that video, especially the beginning ... liberals of course can be Christians! It isn't about a title, it is about our hearts seeking the Lord.

Because the rightwing Christians cannot fathom other people not thinking like them. It's a "Us vs Them" mentality.

They say: Libs support abortiona nd gay marriage, which are unchristian

I say: God never listed politics as a requirement for salvation.
