Do I need to change the transmission fluid in my Volkswagen Jetta?
I have a early 2005 (1999-2004 series) automatic VW Jetta (non-diesel) and am wondering if the transmission fluid should be changed?
I spoke with VW today and they told me it's sealed so it shouldn't be necessary-- and I spoke with a car mechanic who said it should be changed regularly, but it would be pretty costly to do. Would just like to get some opinions as to whether it's a necessary preventative maintenance action to take.

Transmission fluid change is part of regular VW service. The interval is as outlined in your service booklet which is part of the service manual. Surprised a VW tech would not know that. The transmission is sealed, which only means that there is no dipstick and no easy way to top off the fluid. this makes servicing the transmission that much more important. The Tiptronic 5 speed is a costly to replace, don't neglect proper maintenance.

It is said that it will last forever that's why it's sealed. But I believe it should be changed at least once. I haven't done it yet to my 00 Jetta. Pretty nervous. They say its a hit or miss. Can either kill the engine or do very good for it depending on how good the mech is. It's a serious job.

There is absolutely no reason to purchase coolant, transmission fluid, or any other needed products from a dealership. They will mark up the cost double for what you would pay for the same product at a auto parts store or an independent garage. One wise reason to go to a dealership would be for warranty work, nothing more.

My hubbie says its sealed bla bla. I like to have mine flushed and changed yearly. He has never done his and has no problem. My Magnum is a baby and is done no problem. It is up to you check it if it looks good leave it if it looks nasty change. If its low well you my friend may have a leak
