Best time to book is either 1 month or 2 weeks before you go, thats when you will find cheap prices on good flights. You can book the day before to grab a bargain, but you then are taking a risk.
Book on a Wednesday or Thursday first thing in the morning.
Try skyscanner to keep ontop of the price flux.

If you are flying next week, you should book right away. The busier a plane gets, the higher the price goes especially over xmas.
Ideally you should book flights 2-3 months in advance and if you are travelling on a popular route, NYC to London for example and over a festive period, you should book 9-11 months in advance.
If you had a bit more time to play around, I'd recommend you wait until Friday evening to book as many travel agents will cancel their unticketed reservations before finishing work for the weekend and this can result in lower prices. However, as you are travelling next week in a busy period, I think you should book right now, or at least get seats on hold with your travel agent while you hunt around for a cheaper price.
If you have left it too late and the flight you want to get onto is fully booked you could use a service like flightwaitlist.com to try and get a seat on the plane.

There really is no good time to buy tickets unfortunately... I have tried going on certain days of the week at certain times and the prices are pretty rigid for the most part depending on where you are flying to. Some cities are more expensive because there is such a large quantity of business travelers. The best time look is at least 2 weeks prior to your travel

Ticket prices are always changing so no one can tell you when it is best to buy. Tickets should be purchased at least 2 weeks before your travel, preferably earlier. I suggest you buy the tickets now because the price is only going to go up the longer you wait.
