When is the best time travel to Amsterdam?

I am thinking of taking a vacation early next year. Amsterdam has always been on my bucket list. When is the best time to go?

Also, any ideas for vacation packages? I would be traveling alone. So far the packages I have seen are about $2000+. Is that right?

Update:

Hmm. that sounds interesting. Any other info on transportation would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks!

forget the packages. fly in to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport. suggest staying at the Conscious hotel on Overtoom near Leidseplien. Be there for Queens birthday. April 30 the whole city parties in the streets and canals.Everyone dressed in Orange. lots of music and beer. In early May you have all the tulips in bloom.

From Amsterdam's Centraal train station you can take a train to almost any city in Europe

Paris in 3 hours. Brussels in 2 hours. Koln in 2 hours. trams are good. rent a bicycle. but be careful.

also in May there is a fabulous weekend long Jazz festival in Breda a city 1 hour south of Amsterdam

also enjoy the Great beer and "Coffee shops" not coffee but weed cafe. good quality and cheap.

Red light district is safe too. food/restaurants is expensive though.
