Is this a fake Rolex?
I'm 99% sure this thing is fake, which is OK because I found it, but I wanted to get an opinion from people who might know more.
People have said it has the correct weight but none of them were remotely close to experts on the subject. I checked out some websites which said the clear back is an obvious give-away, is this true?
There are matching numbers on the inside of the links connected directly to the case. They read: 16520
On the inside of the clasp there are markings as well, right next to the Rolex symbol, which read:
D12
STEELINOX
62523H 18
Please include references, it would help. Thanks

The web sites are usually seriously out of date. For example, fake Rolex with clear backs have not seen the light of day for years.
I am a watch collector, and a Rolex owner. I live in Asia. I have seen many fakes. I can spot them from a meter away. I can only give you myself as a reference.
1. The markings do not help much. That number suggests that you have a vintage stainless "Jubilee" bracelet.
2. All fake Rolex made in the last 10 years are about the right weight. Some even are heavier than the real thing. The weight test is out of date.
3. Someone will tell you to look at how the second hand moves. That only means the person who is giving you advice does not know a watch from a tennis shoe.
4. Hold the watch tightly in your hand. Shake it hard next to your ear. On a real Rolex you might hear the bracelet making a noise, but your will NEVER hear a scraping sound. ALL fake Rolex will make a scraping sound. You can NOT feel the winding mass spinning inside a real Rolex. You can always feel it on a fake Rolex.
5. If the watch has a rotating bezel, turn it (most sports models do). A Rolex will turn smoothly in 1/2 second steps. A fake will ALWAYS make a "ratchet" sound.
6. Put the watch in the dishwasher and wash some dishes. If water penetrates, then it was fake.
7. If the bracelet reacts to a magnet the watch is fake.
8. If the watch is gold, scratch it. ALL fakes are gold plated. Real Rolex are gold all the way though.

The Rolex 1680 Submariner is a highly prized watch by many collectors. One of the more distinctive features of the Red Sub is the writing on it’s dial.
