What would you do if you were king/queen?

Say it is 800 years ago and you are king or queen and your army conquers a city, then you make slavery illegal. Then a few days later a rich man comes to you and this happens....

Rich Man: I just saw one of my old slaves digging a ditch when I arrived, he was never one to do that type of work. Perhaps he is being forced against his will? Surely not, since you have made slavery illegal.

King: He is being paid in food and shelter.

Rich Man: Perhaps I can give you silk and gold for him?

King: He is digging a ditch to bring water to the city, we need water more than silk and gold.

Rich Man: But when he saw me he got on his knees and begged me to buy him back into slavery, surely you can find another man to dig your ditch.

What would you say to this rich man if you were king/queen and what is your gender?

I do not believe slavery should be illegal as long as the slave willingly consents to being owned. I would gladly sign whatever documents I need to sign to make my life my legal owner and give up all rights to self-determination, making myself her property and slave.

So, if I were king, I would outlaw NON CONSENSUAL slavery. But anybody who WANTED to be a slave would be allowed to become one.

It's a desire that is much more common than you might think.

I'd have the worker come to me and tell me his side of the story. If he wants to go work for someone else he can because he isn't a slave. Therefore he can choose to work where ever he wants.

"We don't have slavery, because property is theft!"

"Your bourgeois bones will make a fine stew for the proletariat!"

Then I'd have my comrades liberate his gold and silk for the people and throw him into the stew.
