How do you solve 8 - 3x = 5x + 16 ?

The part that I'm confused in is whether you add or subtract the 2 variables. I always get confused on whether to add them or subtract them. Please explain.

    8 - 3x = 5x + 16

    there are 2 sides of equation

    to find value of x

    collect the terms containing x on any of the side.

    remember when you are changing side there is change in Sign of that term

    it it just similar to the change in your dress when going to school and after coming home.

    8 - 3x = 5x + 16

    here 5x is having + sign before it (not that when there is no sign means there is + ve sign)

    similarly – 3x is on LHS

    if you add 3x then (– 3x + 3x) will be zero.

    so add 3x on both sides

    8 - 3x = 5x + 16

    8 - 3x + 3x = 5x + 16 + 3x ----- add x terms.

    8 = 8x + 16

    similar to above

    8 – 16 = 8x + 16 – 16

    – 8 = 8x

    now 8x means 8 × x so when you are changing side of 8 attached with x it will become ÷

    divide both sides by 8

    (– 8 ÷ 8) = (8x ÷ 8)

    – 1 = x

    or x = – 1

    You could either add 3x or subtract 5x, either way would work, the goal is just to get them on the same side.

    You could add 3x to both sides so it would be 8=8x+16. Then subtract 16 so you have 8x=-8 so x=-1.

    if you wanted to subtract 5x, do that to get

    8-8x=16, then subtract 8 so -8x=8 and x=-1 again.

    I hope that makes sense haha and good luck :)

    8 - 3x = 5x + 16

    Get Both Variables on one side

    -8 = 8x

    Divide

    8x/8 = -8/8

    x = -1

    It doesn't matter whether you add or subtract the variable, as in the end you will get the same answer.

    ill give you two "standard" ways to see:

    1)add +3x to both sides of the eq. so :

    8 = 8x +16

    and add (-16) =>

    -8 = 8x

    divide by 8

    x = -1

    2) add -5x then -8 so : -8x=8 : x=-1

    simple way after you learned the standard way : you can move(!) the variables/numbers (for example : -3x (var)from right // and 16 (num) from left) to the other side by simply changing its sign (its goes like this : 8 (- 16) = 5x (+3x) ) :D

    So the main task in this operation is to figure out what x is. So try to think what you can add to 16 to get the same result as if you took away 8 from a certain number.

    Remember x can be any number. So give it a go.

    - 8 = 8x

    x = - 1
