∑ is the greek letter sigma which is used to denote a sum.
For example if we have ∑ i --- with an i=1 on the bottom and a 3, that is the same as 1 + 2 + 3.
You see sigma notation used a lot if we want to sum up the forces over a number of particles.

It's the Greek letter sigma. When a function and limits are given as well as the sigma sign, it basically means "plug in all whole numbers found inbetween the limits (inclusive), and add the results".
