Any good drive wipe programs I can download for an old computer running Windows 98?
I've looked high and low to find a good hard drive wiping program so that I can clean my old computer, but everything I've found so far, even though it says it works on 98, doesn't. I really need to get rid of this old paperweight, but have to kill the data first. Any good suggestions?

You could try looking for a drive wiping program in Linux, and get a Live Disc to boot into that instead of Windows. Then compatibility won't matter. Alternatively, take the hard drive out, and take it to a professional shredder so they can properly destroy the drive. If you're truly paranoid, you can get the shredded drive back, and distribute bits and pieces across multiple garbage cans over a lengthy period of time to prevent any one person from getting enough of the drive to try and forensically recover data.

Rather than attempting to wipe the data in the Windows 98 environment why not use it as a slave drive, or get a bridge that allows you to hook it up to your more recent system via USB.

Certainly when you layout, all files are being deleted even your home windows OS, until you can boot to DOS mode and delete exact files utilizing Norton Commander then which you can re-set up you home windows Me. Or do that first proper clicking your computer then click properties then click on web then uncheck the "View my lively computer as net web page" if not go to the primary alternative.

You can use a boot disk to access the drive and simply delete the partition. There are free boot disks available for W98 at http://www.bootdisk.com/
