the reason smart phones work without wifi is because they have 3G or 4G which enables them to connect to cell phone tower, so they don't need wifi. If you could get a 3G or 4G tablet, it would be able to connect to cell towers and you wouldn't need wifi. However if you did get a 3G or 4G enabled tablet, you would have to pay for cell service for that tablet. If you get a wireless router, you could be able to connect your tablet to wifi, and a wireless router is the best choice for wifi, you wouLd not have to pay for cell service, but in turn you would have to pay money to keep the router connected to the internet. But if you do get the router, you could add another device or two for other people, and you wouldn't have to pay for cell service for each individual device. If you do get wifi, you cannot carry the router around with you everywhere, to have service everywhere for every device, each device has to have 3G or 4G, unless you want to pay big bucks.

How Does A Tablet Work

The best two out there, based on your criteria, are the Motorola Xoom and Toshiba Thrive. I'd suggest the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, but it lacks the HDMI, USB, and SD Card slots. The Thrive has a slightly better quality screen (IPS) than the Xoom (VS) - same resolution, just better colors and viewing angle. The Thrive also has a replaceable battery, but is overall thicker and bulkier than the Xoom (uglier, too). You can find the Thrive for just over $400, and you can find factory refurbished Xooms for $399, a really good buy. Be aware that Flash performance on Android tablets is, frankly, horrible. I'm hoping the new hardware and the next major Android release (also coming this fall) will help performance. Its good for video and small animations, but games are virtually unplayable. I would suggest waiting just a bit. The next generation quad-core Android tablets are coming this fall, like the Amazon Hollywood tablet. Spec-wise, they will be many times more powerful than any of the current models, and even the iPad2.

It's my understanding that once you get the tablet registered & set up with wifi (a friend or relative could do that for you...won't cost them anything), you can then load it downloaded games, and use it without wifi. An internet connection wouldn't be necessary to play games that are loaded directly in the device.

best thing to do is not buy one. I have a new one that I got from dell as a gift for buying a new laptop and both of them are sitting here for a month .I cant get them to work and I cant find anyone to get it going for me.So all of that said if it don't work when it comes out of the store don't buy. some one will probably get these as a gift.( someone I don't like )
