Initial charging of new laptop?

I'm getting a new laptop soon, and I'm not sure how to go about the initial charging. Yesterday, I bought a few phones at the mall, and all the salespersons I encountered advised me to use the phones as they come, let them get to about 5% left of energy, then recharge. They told me NOT to completely drain (0%) the battery. They told me NOT to over-charge (keeping the charger connected while the battery is 100%) the battery. Should I do the same with the new laptop?

Yes do the same. Laptop batteries are lithium the same as cell phones.

General rule of thumb is to charge a laptop battery when it has 5-10% life left.

If you will have it plugged into the mains most of the time, leave the laptop battery out, it will decrease its life if it's constantly trying to charge.
