What are your ideas on yesterdays horrible tragedy?

Yesterday in Newtown, Conn. A 20 year old shot and killed 20 children, 6 adults and himself. Now the government wants to take our right to bear arms. The shooter was definitely evil and psychotic, but guns aren't what made him crazy.

Paying attention to current events throughout my lifetime, I'm afraid, has softened the impact of news of the depths of depravity my species seem to have fostered. Fortunately our ignorance shields us from drawing simple conclusions as vengeance which seems to lower our high standards of civility and morals.

History has always had extremes in human nature. Some need a proper point of view with empphasis on the need to understand that people are given responsibility with their choices. Consequences for our actions etc.

I was introduced at an early age to the selfish, callous and twisted self serving insanity of a madman/coward named Charles Whitman. He killed innocents from high up on a clock tower on a clear afternoon in the mid 60's. After learning of the incredible toll of humanity in recent global conflicts, horrors seem to be something I try ignore. It's a simple, sick distorted person that would intentionally wreak such havoc on innocent children.

What I am afraid of is the escalation of the "us against them" phrase that the misguided will adopt for their own self serving agenda.

Maybe we're losing our humanity and would gain much more than things if we focused on our own personal circle of contacts and nurtured the good and ignored the ever present human failings including my own.

1996 Australia - mass shooting led to strict gun control and banning of handguns

1996 UK - mass shooting led to strict gun control and banning of handguns.

Both countries tackled the problem making these isolated events.

Stop making excuses USA, you have a major problem so do something about it or it will happen again and again and again.
