How and when did it become acceptable for Americans to privately own semiautomatic weapons?

Update:

Y'know, this was a request for info, not a screed. I think semiautomatic weapons are unacceptable, but that's an opinon -- and I know I'm out of step w/ my countrymen and -women -- and I also remember a time (it wasn't 100 years ago) when someone might own a gun but didn't consider a semiautomatic gun part of any legitimate collection.

I have a gun-rights friend who collects old rifles and pistols, and -- this is part I especially admire -- makes his own replicas. He even makes his own bullets. This is a craftsman who appreciates the workmanship and artistry that go into fashioning a weapon.

So let me clarify my question:

When did it become politically, socially, emotionally and legally acceptable for Americans to privately own semiautomatic weapons? Looking here for a YEAR or a CAUSE or a POLITICAL MOVEMENT.

As soon as they were invented. If outlawing things worked there would be no problems with drugs or undocumented immigrants.

Isn't it ironic that this happened in a "gun-free zone"? If one of the teachers had a gun then they could've shot the shooter as soon as he arrived. Banning guns doesn't work. It never will. It will only make things worse by disarming the law abiding populace while criminals keep theirs. So the only option is for the law abiding citizens to have the option to have a gun. If a responsible citizen has a gun then any would-be shooter would be dead before they could start a mass shooting. You never hear about the positives of firearm ownership because its not exciting. Its not "newsworthy". Hearing about a burglar breaking into someone's house at night with a knife and having the owner pull a gun on him and keep it there while the police arrive doesn't sound exciting does it? A crime being prevented with a firearm happens much, much more frequently than a crime committed with a firearm. Most of the time shots aren't fired. Compared to everything else, firearm related killings are very, very low.

Drugs are illegal, yet I could go to a random street in America and get something in 5 minutes. Banning them is working well, huh?

It is acceptible as soon as the government and criminals have them. Americans have the RIGHT to equal protection, and the RIGHT to bear arms, and a constitutional guarantee that the RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS will not be INFRINGED UPON.

Stop trying to disarm law abiding citizens. Get with a political philosophy that actually condemns crime and promotes morality, instead of one that does exactly the opposite.

LIBERALS kill babies in abortions and disarm CITIZENS.

Pretty much as soon as they were invented about 100 years ago. Be careful your ignorance is showing.

You think a semiautomatic is a machine gun, don't you?

    Arms, not brand specific.
