How long has he got to live with stage 4 lung cancer.?

My dad has 4 secondary tumors in his brain, 2 in the lymphnode in his neck. They are biopsying the lymph node tomorrow to find out what kind of cancer. I already asked on this board about prognosis and was told it is terminal, my question is roughly how long are we looking at. I know I seem very ill informed, I am in the process of finding out as much as I can but he was fine and well this time last week and got a migrane and was told all this so I havnt had alot of time to research yet.

When a friend of mine's mother was diagnosed with a lung cancer after the metastases in her brain caused seizures, I looked up prognosis for her cancer and found a large study of people with her same type of cancer who had metastases to the brain, and found that all died within 5 years. About a quarter died in under a year from diagnosis, and after two years about two thirds were dead. The remaining third died in the following three years. Average survival was between one and one and a half years.

My friend's mother lived nine months from her diagnosis. She did have some treatment (radiation, steroids, shunts) and she herself seemed to think she would "beat it" until almost the end, but it was fairly rapid. On the other hand, she did have time for all of her friends and family to come in and visit and say their good byes or good wishes, and all of her family was there when she died, and until the last month she was still pretty active.

Every patient is different and even the best doctor can only estimate. After all the testing is done, his doctor can give you a better answer, but cannot pinpoint the exact week or month.

I understand the agony you and family are experiencing.

Buy birthday cards for each of the family members. For your Dad to write in. Then you can have your birthday with him still sort of there. He has very little time, I'd say. Don't know how long. Take lots of photos.

    Hi.

My suggestion would be to stop worrying how much time he has left and spend time with him instead.

No one but GOD can determine how long we have on this earth.

    Spend time with him.
