Only in Montreal that the french language is shrinking a bit because of immigration, but elsewhere it's the same.

It's been gradually shrinking, but very very slowly.

Quebec's government, or at least part of it, is always fighting tooth and nail to preserve their culture. The problem for them is basically that they're the only French-dominant entity in all of North America, surrounded by us stinking Anglophones from every angle. In the rest of Canada and the USA the common language is English, a fact from which they really can't escape.

The separatist governments have enacted several nazi-esque laws and regularions in an attempt to preserve and promote the French language, which has unfortunately pushed many people and businesses away from them. Still, they feel it's important enough to warrant such sacrivices.

It is shrinking, which is one reason that the Quebec government has taken so many steps to save it.

My ex does computer simulation and modelling, and once worked for a Federal Government department that asked her to model demographics for career and training reasons. As I recall, in her models, by the year 2044, there would be so few Francophones in Canada, that they were no longer significant for the model.

Now, this was a projection, based on data available about 2001 or so. But, her results certainly unsettled a lot of people!
