Atheists: If a reality apart from matter existed, how could you expect there to be tangible evidence of it?

Wouldn't if have to make itself known in some other way? Wouldn't it require belief to know its existence? You claim that matter is all that exists, but at the same time claim that the lack of physical evidence for a non-material reality proves that there isn't one. But if there was one, of course it wouldn't manifest itself as one of the tangible objects that we perceive with our 5 senses. Right now I'm not specifically talking God, I'm talking the broader subject of materialism versus idealism.

Update:

Atheists typically think that matter is all that exists.

Because your own bible has stories of him showing the reality of his existence in the material world by way of miracles - parting the red sea, changing water into wine, sending down fire from the sky, etc.

So according to your book he clearly *can* provide convincing material evidence of his existence. Therefore, knowing that we are rational beings who best sift fact from fiction by examining tangible evidence, he has a moral obligation to provide tangible evidence of his existence before condemning us for not believing.

Oh and Jack, you can't use belief to know something. Believing and knowing are two different things. Belief is nothing more than a willingness to accept that something is true. The word implies a lack of absolute certainty hence the need for willingness on the part of the believer. Knowing is being certain about something, having mental cognizance of what is real and that it *is* real.

But this isn't what most religious people believe. They believe that a God exists who constantly has an effect on the material world. If there is such an effect, it would be measurable and therefore there should be tangible evidence. If there is no such effect, then why should be care at all about anything that will, in no way, effect us?

I wouldn't know. There may very well be such a thing. When Abrahamic theists want to quit defining their god as an 'omnipotent entity who loves us', they'll get a lot less crap from me.

I'm an atheist and I often bring up the problems of 'awareness' and 'choice' and how they both seem to clash with hard materialism. 'Typically'? Sure. Atheism is strongest when it's simply 'a non belief in any deity'. When it starts making positive claims, it has the burden of proof.

Yes, but the deities of theism are charged with sending plagues on Egypt or transforming water into wine and so on, which are claims about physically observable things.

The problem with it is that even if you have a "supernatural" thing, it could just as well be aliens or interdimensional beings or ghosts or wizards pretending to be "god". the only way to solve this would be if god interrupted free will and revealed himself to everyone at the same time in their own language

Some daft Atheists think that matter is all that exists.

Like some daft religious types can't see anything outside of a book.

Other believe in time, space, thought, multi-dimensions, emotions, etc, and such abstract concepts as mathematics.

[You claim that matter is all that exists]

False. I also claim that energy exists. I acknowledge that some things might be hard to measure so I am willing to cut some slack. But I'm not going to cut ANY slack for theories that require me to believe in magic or miracles as anything other than "currently unexplained science." No supernatural stuff allowed.

    Ok, you summarize materialism incorrectly.

Anyways, evidence has to do with observable reality. I expect you to provide observable evidence for the existence of God.

No, because you are just making a hypothetical situation. Matter exists because it's demonstrable, and does not disprove a god.

Science doesn't aim to disprove a god whatsoever, you can make up ANY god if you chose and it will still be impossible to disprove. Does that make it true? Of course not.

Materialism is unproven - and there is a growing amount of experimental evidence that refutes the claims of materialism.

The_Doc_. How do you know what you assert to be "magic, miracles or supernatural" are not just phenomena that falls into your "currently unexplained science." category?

"Atheists typically think that matter is all that exists."

    Wrong.

Atheists typically believe in physics, Energy exist it has no mass and is not 'matter'

Don't know what dumb *** atheists you've been talking to.
