Does America need to have an adult debate on gun control?

I accept that there are reasonable arguments on both sides of the gun control debate. In light of the 13th multiple murder this year, should America's leaders at least have an adult debate on the subject, come out of it what may?

Update:

A lot have people have seemed to imply that the only option besides the status quo is an outright ban on guns. While those are both options, there are others.

* Ban certain types of weapon

* Regulate private sales the same as gun shop sales

* There are probably several others that others can come up with

Yes. I think there needs to be a serious discussion about gun control, the types of guns that the public can own, and the second hand gun market where you are not required to do background checks.

I'm pretty sure from the tone of your question and that it was asked on Y!A Canada that your idea of an "adult debate" is one that would advocate more laws to regulate a hundred million people who are not breaking any current laws. How about we debate how one raises a child? This latest guy's parents divorced and were ordered to take parenting courses. A little late in the game, though. It doesn't start with a gun.

Over 100 people die each day due to Automobile accidents, Does America need to have an adult debate on Driving Safety? But, let me say it loud and clear, banning guns would be an extremely bad idea. Criminals, by definition, do not obey laws. Psychotic mass murderers do not obey laws. With the proliferation of guns in the United States, if citizens were banned from owning guns, it would only be the good, law-abiding citizens who would obey the laws – precisely the people we want to have guns. Criminals would keep their guns. Psychotic mass-murderers would still find ways to acquire guns. There would simply be less people with the ability to stop or deter them.

The vast majority of gun owners in the United States of America have never harmed another human being, and never will. People use guns for hunting, for sport, or for an absolute last resort in self-defense. The fact that criminals use guns to commit crimes does not mean guns are the problem. Criminals are the problem. If all the guns in the world were taken away, criminals would find new ways to rob convenience stores, to commit muggings, to terrify people, and to commit horrible atrocities and mass-murders. No, gun control is not the answer.

On a personal note, my wife and I own two hand-guns. They are exclusively for self-defense. We sincerely hope we never have to use them. We actually question if we could ever use them to shoot a person.

With the vested interests and selfish politisising on the subject there, I am wondering if that country is capable of a mature debate on the subject. The next few weeks will be interesting.

I think if America does not make some mature changes re gun laws it will lose respect on the world stage.

i do not inevitably imagine guns should be constrained. I do imagine that the mind-set of procuring a gun should be uniform and streamlined. I also imagine that firearms should be registered and that folk should be screened for psychological health purposes. the thanks to attempt this's the large question. ultimately, lets evaluate going back to banning extreme ability clips for customers. All that would want to help. in spite of the indisputable fact that the right to personal a gun is clean and can't be debated from now on.

Cant have a adult discussion when republicans are more concerned about their guns getting regulated than children getting killed.

And the first topic should be why the gun laws we have now are not being enforced.

No.We already have gun control laws in place just as we have laws in place making murder, rape, drunk driving, stealing, etc. Illegal. like it or not that is the truth

No, we need an adult discussion on who we are as a nation. Unfortunately there are no adults in the government to hold a discussion with.
