What is the PURPOSE of the 2nd Amendment?
Why, in your words, did the founding fathers include this in the Bill of Rights?
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

So we can defend ourselves from nuts both foreign and domestic. Back then they only had single shot weapons that took at least a minute to reload and a big knife in one's boot. I see absolutly no need for assault weapons to be legally held by the general public these days. Full-auto was banned back during the Gangster Era. Semi-auto's could not be envisioned back when the Bill of RIghts was added to our Constitution, and I have a hunch that if we could ask our Founding Fathers if semi-auto's, machine guns and other weapons of mass destruction should be banned after them reading our recent history, would say, "We were't discussing and writing about future weapons."

Experience. The first thing that the British soldiers tried to do to stop the revolution of the colonies was to attempt to confiscate the guns and gun powder of the people. Towns had armories where the gun powder was kept and the individuals were able to go and purchase it. It was the people with their own weapons that were able to protect their supply of powder and weapons that enabled the colonists to win the war. Had the British soldiers been able to confiscate the armories, we would still be British citizens today.
The same is true today. If the government shut down all gun manufacturers and stores, the supply of ammunition would soon be depleted making the guns effectively obsolete. This would allow the government to have complete control of the people and much easier for a military dictator to come to power.

It seems obvious to me the intent was to allow States to raise militias for self-defence. In the late 18th century countries didn't maintain large standing armies but tended to recruit men when they were needed, and the intent of letting people keep weapons at home was so there would be a large pool of potential recruits.
However, what made sense in an 18th century agricultural society is not appropriate to a 21st century urbanised society. Farmers and people who live in remote areas might still need firearms to defend themselves from animals, but civilians don't have any sensible reason for access to weapons such as AK47s and MP5s. The 2nd Amendment should be repealed.

Its purpose was to protect us from invaders like the British redcoats. It's highly unlikely its purpose was to permit Americans to have the inalienable right to shoot our fellow citizens at will.
