    Yes.

The newly minted Republican Party.... WAS the progressive party of its era.

Ryde On: Pick up a history book man.... virtually ALL of the Confederate States..... seceded from the union PRIOR to Lincoln's inauguration.

The South likes to blame Lincoln for their treason.... but he WAS NOT EVEN PRESIDENT.... when they committed their treason.

Lincoln was always a Whig, which was the party of business. He was a sort of Rockefeller Republican. The Republican Party was founded by Free Soil Democrats and Abolitionist Whigs. Having seen a slave market in New Orleans when young, Lincoln detested slavery all his life thereafter.

in case you propose a fist combat or wrestling tournament of a few type, i think of Washington could win. regardless of each and everything, he became knowledgeable interior the protection stress and grew up getting to grasp a thank you to run a plantation. Lincoln, on the different hand became "bookish" as a newborn, teen, and adolescent and as an person became rather skinny besides as having suffered many actual illnesses (which contain Marfan's Syndrome, malaria, and smallpox).

By today's Republican standards, Abraham Lincoln was a RINO.

The term progressive didn't exist yet. It dates to the turn of the 20th century.

Lincoln was a liberal in his party. The conservative wing wanted to stop the spread of slavery, the radical wing wanted to give blacks full rights. He was in the middle of the two, wanting to end slavery.

I don't know, I don't care. No matter what else Lincoln did or was, he kept the union together and abolished slavery. Thank God for Lincoln.

The guy didn't even have the diplomatic skills to solve a problem without starting a civil war .

Why does everyone think he was so great ?

At that time, he was probably considered a progressive.

He was anti slavery, which made him very unpopular with Southerners.

He knew right from wrong - the same as modern day conservatives.

You understand, of course, that it was a conservative Christian, by the name of William Wilberforce who fought tirelessly to end slavery, and brought Lincoln's resolve to fight against it.
