A fake security camera might fool a burglar, but you're essentially rolling the dice. Experienced criminals can spot the difference between a real camera and a fake - a clear piece of glass vs. an actual lens, for example.

Take a few minutes to check out this entry from a home security blog and see what you think.

Your parents are right and it's their house. I rcommend the D-Link 930L or 932L or better, which will monitor live, and email motion-sensed photos which you can all check. Cover your entrances and main living spaces indoors. There are other choices for outdoor cams. Burglars might just avoid residences they see with cameras. If you put cams in your private spaces, make them private with confidential passwords. Burglary has become a big business and is being organized. Police are not very helpful after your stuff is gone and suspects are unknown. Install security alarm and monitor and choose a reputable company which will provide 24 hour service. Burglars these days make sure you are not home when they smash in the door and ransack the bedrooms where they're most likely to find your money and jewelry, then run off. They are very quick when they do this. Often police arrest residents when the homeowner tries to apprehend burglars, charging the resident with gun or other weapon charges- they take th e"low hanging fruit". You wind up assaulted by crooks and law enforcement.

I have security cameras installed in my house for added security. However, cameras and scanners will not make a house burglar proof or even deter burglars. A few things to do to a house is check and make sure all windows are closed and locked. Make sure all exit doors are closed and locked. If they entered through the door by kicking it, maybe invest in a security strike plate. This offers a much stronger strike plate and uses 3 to 4 inch screws instead of the little 1 inch screws a regular strike plate has. Add deadbolts to exit doors. Use the keyed ones. These are the types that have to use a key to lock/unlock on both sides. A homeowner wants to either make their house less eye catching or make it harder and longer to gain access into. Also, most burglars will not come back to get more. They are impulsive and will go elsewhere to get more.

    Sometimes, sorta.

It helps a lot if the camera is very believable and even better if it matches the appearance of other cameras which ARE real elsewhere on the property.

Some of the best fake cameras I've seen had a small LED bulb that glowed, indicating the camera had power. Completely fake, but hard to disbelieve.

there's a good chance a burglar may be deterred with a fake security camera. it would help if the camera look very realistic. i bought one from amazon and seems to work like a charm.

  • Most burglars are not very smart and unless you live in a multi-million dollar mansion, you are not going to get a professional and smart burglar.

So yes, if an average burglar sees a fake security camera he/she will go to a target without any camera.

It's relatively straightforward for a burglar to avoid being recognizable if he knew where the cameras are or even if he just suspects that there are cameras. That's why so many wear a hoodie, sunglasses and a baseball hat. However, the fake cameras discourage opportunistic crimes.
