Why do mass shootings happen in gun free zones?

The only 2 mass shootings in the past 10 years that didn't take place in a gun free zone was Gabby Giffords and Fort Hood. The rest in schools, malls, movie theaters, colleges, where guns aren't allowed

Why is this?

because the shooter knows everyone in there is unarmed.

What a stupid question. These mass shooters are crazy! You think they go to a mall and shoot the place up because it is a gun free zone?! They go there because they want to kill as many people as they can and that is where you can find large yet confined spaces filled with people.

Normal people don't walk around armed. If I were in the mall and I saw somebody carrying a gun, you better believe I would move as far away from them as possible.

I don't think killers specifically choose a place because they know it's "gun free", I think they choose the places they choose because they know they'll have a better chance of getting a high body count, which I'd imagine is the goal of someone who most likely wants revenge on society.

Gabby Giffords was targeted because Jared Loughner hated her and her beliefs. He knew where she would be at a specific time and so he took the opportunity.

The shooters are on a power trip and defenseless people are the perfect way for them to obtain that feeling of total domination.

A hunter might not be so keen to enter the woods if the deer could shoot back.

The shooters did not choose these locations because they are "gun free zones." They chose them because they are places where people are vulnerable and where retaliation is unlikely.

It is unlikely there would be guns in a school whether it is designated a "gun free zone" or not.

They didn't google "gun free zones" and choose a target by that criterion. They chose a place where people are inherently vulnerable.

Better question is why do only white people do these horrible mass shootings and they still have the nerve to call black people violent animals

as an australian just looking on, i must admit, i have no sympathy, this problem has been in america for years and years, and americans just cannot get enough guns and then wonder why fruitcakes go off the rails and kill twenty or so every few months

Becuase cowards prey on the weak and unarmed

Because that is where a lot of people are most likely to be.
