Drive across America.. How dangerous?

I'm British and have a Russian boyfriend. It has always been a dream of mine to drive across America in a camper van but as I've gotten older I've become increasingly worried about how dangrous that might be! In England it's literally less than 1% chance someone will hold you up at gun point, it's all about knives over here! But I'm so weary about going to a country where literally anyone can buy a pistol, I don't understand how some Americans can believe that being able to do that keeps them safer. I tend to think they don't actually believe it themselves. Also I'm worried about what kind of reception my boyfriend should expect in the southern and middle states. Will they be aggressive towards him because he is Russian?

Update:

So far this has not helped what so ever.

    Driving cross-country in the US is no more dangerous than driving through a larger U.S. city. Your biggest hazard believe it or not is other traffic on the road (especially if you're taking an RV or "camper van"). Many folks do not understand the difficulty of driving a large vehicle on the highway. I deliver new Class 6, 7 and 8 trucks from the manufacturer nation-wide and in the process drive about 60-70k miles per year... My advice is take it slow and easy, plan ahead and realize that those around you may not be courteous drivers.

    As far as violence is concerned it's all about knowing where you are and better yet knowing where not to go. Contrary to popular worldwide belief not every American has or regularly carries a gun; just use your judgment and common sense and you'll be fine. Stick to the main roads and touristy-type places and you should have no problems. A good rule of thumb is if it looks sketchy or weird just don't go there. Also don't be afraid to ask questions as most of the time the locals will be your best source of information on any given area.

    And don't worry about how you or your boyfriend may be treated here because you're not from here. Most of us in the US are racially/ethnically tolerant and those who aren't are easily avoidable. There are some places in the rural southeast where I know that I (as someone who's of mixed race) may not be welcome but they are few and far between and more importantly I have no reason to be there anyway since they're WAY off the "beaten path". Even more important is the fact that folks come here to the US from all over the world on a daily basis for work and vacation; and they'll get home just as safely as they arrived here. Or if they choose to stay (and many do) they'll be fine here as well. Sorry if I rambled a bit too much, just my two cents. Good luck to you.

    We do not have highwaymen, or ruffians running around loose. Anyone can be a victim of a random crime, but you greatly reduce the chances if you act smart and careful. Follow the same precautions you would follow in a big city in England or Russia. The big one here would be: do not be rude back to a driver who has been rude to you. Those are the ones that might act out their road rage - with a gun.

    America is a melting pot. Your bf should not have any trouble. We are not aggressive toward visitors. {You are enriching our economy, lol.}

    Your plan is certainly doable. Just be aware The U S is a huge country, especially if you are zig-zagging around so that you can see "everything." It takes 5 days at 10hrs of driving each day, to go straight across the US {which you do not want to do, because you would miss 98% of what is out there.}

    I live in the mid west and my mother's whole family lives in the south. They all have guns. And contrary to popular believes, they do not run around with them tucked into their jeans,

    I have driven 12 hours from Chicago to TN by myself or with my children several time.

    You are not going to get high jacked by gun point driving along the US highways.

    You need to stay at camp sites. You can not just pull off the road anywhere to spend the night. Camp sites are safe. Many families vacation this way.

    Don't know why you think your boyfriend being Russian would cause any problems in the south or mid west.

    That's silly! You're no more in danger in the United States than you are in the United Kingdom. We like our British cousins, and welcome you to visit our country. You'll enjoy your holiday, and so will your boyfriend. True, you may encounter a "knucklehead" occasionally, but that is true no matter what country you visit.

    Few states allow citizens to walk around with a gun. That's nonsense. The vast majority of American gun owners are responsible, law abiding citizens, and you have nothing to fear from them.

    Renting (hiring) a motor home or travel trailer (caravan) can be costly. That may be the only problem you would have. Understand the the U.S is roughly 3000 miles wide East to West, and 1200 miles wide North to South.

    Well I am from the US, and let me tell you it is an interesting place haha.... I've driven from Ohio to New Mexico (three days) and we stayed in hotels. Everyone was pretty friendly. Honestly, if you are white, you have nothing to worry about racially unless you are going into some states like Tenessee and Louisiana. I'm part Japanese and have gotten some comments thoughout my life. Guns are an issue (you probably heard about the shooting) but people are very touchy about that subject. Even though I believe in stricter gun control, I know my family doesn't want to give up guns. If you can, you should travel with an American friend
