Hunting squirrels - what type pellets?

A friend just gave me a Crosman 765 Pumpmaster .177 caliber BB/pellet rifle her ex bought at Walmart. I have a critter problem( mainly squirrels ), in my backyard near the 4 large mango trees and need something to help deal with them. Have heard that pellets are better at killing them than BB's, but now realize there are many pellet types. Does anyone know which ammo would be best ? I have a 1/4 acre lot and will be shooting from 20 - 30 yards or so.

hi. I have been hunting squirrels with a pellet rifle for a long time. I have found that the pointed pellets work better than the "hollow point" pellets. I have found these lower powered(760 and 765 pumpmasters) to be too underpowered for the hollow points. They do not have the force to cause the bullet to expand like a true hollow point. They loose knock-down power and accuracy really fast.

I bought a box of them and watched about 10 bounce off squirrels . I threw them away , went back to my sharp points, and never had another problem.

As for distance, I think 20 yards will be pushing your luck. You will start losing knock-down after that. I try to stay at or under 15yards.

I hope this info has helped you. If you would like more tips on squirrel hunting, I would be glad to answer any questions you might have. Email me at prairieoutdoors@gmail.com

I like the pointed tip pellets too. They have way better penetration than any others I have used. I also agree about the shot ranges. 30 yards is going to be far past what your rifle is reliably capable of. 20 would be pushing it...

Assuming the pellets generate suitable accuracy, wadcutters would seemingly be the worst since they may have the lowest penetration. Rounded or pointed facets provides you with the nice penetration, with hollow facets being somewhere within the middle. On the grounds that you want enough penetration, i'd propose rounded or pointed pellets.
