Why does my miniature horse keep coughing?

He's 19 years old. I've tried deworming him with lots of different kinds of dewormers. I've given him cough medicine. It sounds like a dry cough. If he has a rib out, could that cause a cough? He coughs 20 times a day or more and he's been doing it for months. I can't afford to take him to the vet right now and I like doing home remedies as much as possible. I've had him for a year and a half and I've never been able to get his weight up to where I'd like it. I've tried giving him ivermectin, parentel pamoate, panacur, safeguard, wormwood, coltsfoot and fresh garlic. I am feeding him a gallon of grain mix a day(16% sweet feed, 15% rabbit feed, beet pulp and calf manna)and all the hay and fresh water he wants. Any other ideas?

It could be, he has lung worms. Or if he is allergic to the dust in the hay? If so, try wetting his hay down with a solution of vinegar and water in a garden sprayer.... A gallon of grain is probably far to much, especially if it isn't helping him, anyway. He might need some copper or selenium.

I have a Peruvian Paso gelding that has been slowly gaining weight. It has been a long struggle. I bought him a year ago, very, very thin... Dull coat, sparse tail, but such a sweet face!

I worked him up to a couple of gallons of grain a day, along with 1/4 cup of corn oil. Within 4 months, he had gained a lot of his weight back, but still was bony. I had a vet look at his teeth, and he said they looked great!! What else could I do? He continued to look a little better throughout this summer, but still hadn't gained all his weight. I gave him Probios a couple of times, about every 3 days.. Thinking that might help his gut get some good bacteria.

He is still a little underweight, but he is growing out a nice tail, he has a beautiful mane, and bright, lovely eyes!!! Time will tell. He is comming 5 years old.

Can he go in and out of barn when he choose? If you have him in the barn more, and your barn is sealed too much, this can make one cough due to his hay and too much dust in the barn just floating around. You might try just lightly spraying his hay with water. But too-little ventilation of the barn and hay too dry is 'for sure asking for this cough'. Use the daily Strongid-Dewomer and alternate your paste every 3 month. Also remember, Horses are just like us, yet more fragile, he could also have 'acid reflux'. I know you are feeding him the best of sweet feed, that's what I use too. But if I had to sell, something I would, just to pay for a Vet to see my Horse. As the old speaking goes, don't own a horse if you can't afford a Vet. But please do try 'lightly water spraying his hay. Another thing you may try is rubbing liniment under his jaw, then all the way down his neck. This is help with acid reflux. Great Post! aleechawa

I would also suggest wetting down the shavings and the hay in the stall. It could be the dust that is causing the coughing. It could also be allergies. There are TriHist granules that can be added to the feed to help control allergy outbreaks - you should be able to get this from your vet. It is also possible that the infection that your horse had was resistant to the antibiotics that your vet gave you. If he still has and infection you should ask your vet to do a culture and sensitivity on the gunk down in your horses respiratory tract. This will tell your vet what bacteria are living down there and what antibiotics will kill them. For the time being I would try to reduce the amount of dust your horse is exposed to. Good Luck!

He might be allergic to the hay, or the dust from the hay is making him cough, this happens with the old-ish horses. This has happened to 2 horses I know , and this could be the problem
