Questions about Mentally Challenged People?

I don't really know or have interacted with mentally challenged people before so I have some questions I hope you all can answer. I'm talking about people that have moderate to severe mental disabilities. Sorry if I sound ignorant, but I'm just wondering

1) Why do they have problems interacting with people? I know it's because they can't recognize emotions, but is it something else within the brain?

2)Since they can't communicate with "normal" people, can they communicate with each other? Because they have the same communication disabilities

3)What do they teach the kids in the special ed classes? They have a classroom in my school for these kids but I'm unsure what they do.

4)After graduation from high school, do most mentally challenged people live with their parents? Or do they live by themselves and what jobs do they usually do?

5)Do they retain information? I know they can remember basic things like counting and the like. But if I asked them to call someone two days from now would they remember?

Thanks for answering these questions and if any of these questions are offensive to you I do not intend them to be.

    1) its people with Aspergers (like me) who have trouble recognizing emotions, we are not "mentally challenged" it is just an issue with reading facial expressions and body language, no other reason

2)While we can communicate with normal people, I often find that I feel much more at home around other kids with disabilities, and since I have such a mild disorder I am often a translator of sorts between "normal" people and disabled people

3)they get taught social skills and simple life skills in the lower functioning classes, and in higher functioning ones we work on areas of school work thatare difficult for us

4)Higher functioning people like me can live on our own and hold down normal jobs, lower functioning people typically live with parents or in group homes

5)Unless they have severe mental retardation, then yes they do retain information.

I was diagnosed with mild mental retardation. I also have aspergers. Your answer to question number 1 is that these people can communicate with about anybody through different ways. I was in special educational classes until 6th grade but then I was put back in until a few months before graduation. To me, the work felt like baby work. A you did was easy packets, cleaned, cooked and played games. I felt bored because I was not being challenged enough. I was always the first one done. Towards the end of 12th grade I strted my GED study classes. I did Math and my GED study packets half the day, then for the other half a day I would either attend my Early Childhood Class or my Internships and go home an hour earlier on my internship days. I student taught autistic children too. Then after high school I graduated with an IEP. I started community college that fall, but graduated with my GED that summer. just this May I earned my Associates Degree. Now I am attending my Bachelors Degree program online through University of Phoenix. I was accepted to 2 private universities but I could not really afford. I am going to study some classes for now until fallm while I start job hunting. I hope I get a good paying job. I am not sure as to what level of education I retained but on my WISC Test I got scores with the 85 to 115 range in high school. I know how to write college level essays and my GPA now is a 3.56. It was a 4.0 2 weeks ago.

i was put in special ed but i am i no way mentally challenged at all. i have mild adhd and was very hyper as a kid(still am a bit) ad i did not think before i acted and got distracted a lot so they put me in special ed with a bunch of kids who were nice but not as smart as me. we lerned what the other kids learned but we were like 3 years behind them and learned more slowly. i remember doing these busy work packets and reading in theses books that were so easy and i was never really chalenged much. anyway my parents fought for me to get out of there and i went to the normall classes. being who i am, im sort or akward around new people because of bit of anxiety but once people get to know me they realize im a great guy who loves to speak his mind(sometimes too much). most special ed children have certian dissabilities but excell in other areas so to say they communicate diffrent is usually false. because many special ed kids are seperated from the regular ed kids they grow a bit apart because they do see the others as much. being in the small room at the end off the hall all day seperates you from the gossip and drama of the regular classes.

You (established) can abandon any baby you wish to have to abandon to adoption... That doesn't make it right though. Personal corporations will ordinarily say no in view that they're simplest in it for the money, they usually're no longer gonna make close to as so much cash from a child with developmental issues as they are able to from a HWNB. How about be an actual buddy and help your buddy mother or father her kids (who could also be good enough anyway - unless they are born, close to nothing is guaranteed).
