A good friend of mine was injured at work.?

It was relatively minor, a slight sprain I guess, but his job wont let him work and suspended him without pay until he is cleared by a doctor. It costs money to have a doctor fill out paperwork (he cant afford it) and they will assume he is voluntarily leaving his position if he does not return it within 7 days. Can he get unemployment if the terminate him for being unable to pay a doctor to clear him? This situation seems so wrong to me.

    Assuming for whatever reason that this is somehow not a worker's comp case, he will not likely qualify for unemployment. If a person is terminated for being medically unable to do a particular job, they can sometimes get unemployment, if they are capable of doing other less strenuous work. But in this case, the person would not be fired because of being unable to do the job, they would be fired for failure to comply with a reasonable request from the employer. So, no, he would not likely get unemployment.

    When I need paperwork filled out for work, I bring in two sets of forms: one is blank, the other, I have filled out as much of it as I can, so the doctor only has to fill out a little bit, and they usually do not charge me for this. The blank one is in case the doctor does not want to use the form that I have completed.

    He needs to contact a lawyer that handles workers compensation cases. As soon as possible.

    There are so many things that can happen in these cases. A lot depends on the specific laws in place in the state in which your friend's working. As another commenter said he should not have to pay anything at all for treatment for an on-the-job injury. However, sometimes businesses/employers DON'T do the right thing - they don't pay the insurance premiums for their workers comp. When that happens an injured worker has to pay for it himself or else become a charity case.

    Long story short - call lawyer ASAP.

    If he was injured while at work,it is a workman's compensation issue.

    He shouldn't have to pay a cent formedicalcare and reports.
