Can I Use Dirt From Outside For My Tank?
I am trying to make a planted tank with soil, but can I use the dirt from my backyard in my aquarium? My dirt from my back yard has no fertilizer, but my dirt is cracked and brownish-red, similar to the color of clay and it seems to contain minerals due to shiny particles inside the dirt.

I would never recommend anyone to use dirt from outside. Try rinsing dirt thoroughly, what do you get? All the dirt is gone and what your left with are varying sizes of rocks. Save yourself the time and buy nutrient rich substrate, made for plants.
I recommend, Aqua Soil Amazonia http://www.adgshop.com/Aqua_Soil_Amazonia_p/104-03... the best money can buy.
CaribSea Ec-Complete, http://www.caribsea.com/itempage_freshwatersubstra... another great product.
Seachem Flourite http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/Flou...
They may seem a little expensive but its not a good idea to cut corners with a planted aquarium, you will not get the desired results that you may be expecting.

You would have to THOROUGHLY rinse it before using it. Also consider the fact that if there are any type of pesticides or other chemicals in your soil it will most definitely kill any fish and/ or invertebrates you would want to put in your tank. I would not recommend doing this, instead get some aquarium soil like eco-complete or flourite, they are worth the money.

Unless you know the exact chemistry of your garden soil, you can't use it as you have no idea what it might do to your tank's water chemistry.
Use store bought aquatic soils. They're safer.

It would all depend on the type of Fish, i wouldnt recommend it anyway fish are very sensitive to the slightest things and I would probably consult a specialist before acting on anything try visiting your nearest pet store or Vets
