14 month old with a slight fever?

Our 14 month old boy is facing his first real sickness (thankfully its been this long!) He has a little fever for 3 days or so and has been bouncing from 99-99.8 (usually 98.2 range) and his highest point, just now, was 101.5 after we went out and had him bundled up.. Ive read that common fever temps for his age are 100-103, so im not very worried about a serious illness, after all, he just has a runny nose and a slight loss of appetite, nothing else we have found.. He only wants his mom right now though, and will sit and cry until she holds him. I can sometimes, but he wont play with me or anything. With her, he will play, eat small amounts, and is still drinking his usual 5 to 6 ounces of water, gatorade, or milk every 3 hours.. He is sleeping his usual hours as well..

The issue is, we are taking a 6 hour trip north for vacation tomorrow, leaving around noon. We arent sure whether to worry about him or not. Not so much worried about the ride, but the fact we will be gone for 6 days in a area 45 minutes from the nearest hospital.. We will have all the comforts of home, staying with family and not in a hotel, but there is still reason for us to worry.. Should we worry? or do you think he will be fine? Do we try to get him into a doctor before we leave?

Update:

I need to add a couple things to this.. Im his dad, for one lol

And also i know the area we are going very well.. Its just far from any hospital..

ALSO--- he doesnt have insurance any more, unfortunately.. he was on medicaid, but it was taken.. So doctor visits do not come cheap, especially if the only one we can get him in to before noon is the ER.. Soooo, what are the suggestions knowing this information?

Well, you have one more day to see what develops. I would definitely take some children's Tylenol or generic liquid.

Examine him to see what is hurting or swollen, throat, ears, abdomen.

If he is no worse and there are not more serious symptoms, I wouldn't worry too much, it IS winter, lots of bugs.

    Keep him warm.

It doesn't seem that serious. I think it is okay to skip the doctor for now and pack a thoroughly for possible issues.

Make sure to have Pedialtye, Tylenol, Motrin, diaper rash cream (more prevelant when sick), nasal aspirator, thermometer, something soft to wipe up the runny nose, and some very gentle foods like bananas and crackers.

You may have to watch for coughing and/or congestion to increase from the dry air in the car. This is very common. If he seems miserable, have your wife sit by him while you drive.

The 45 minutes from the hospital isn't that far. The average ER wait is certainly longer than that.

Hey there. I also have a 14 month old little guy that is dealing with the same thing. I took him to the dr today with a 101.3 temp. The doctor told me to keep rotating Tylenol and Motrin, keep offering fluids and monitoring his other symptoms. I took him in at 2 gave him Motrin at 4 he was down to 99.3 then went back up to 101.6 so yes I'd be a little worried about your guy. He said if his temp isn't back down by Monday to call for sure and bring him in. So I'm not sure if you've done any Tylenol or anything but try that and for me personally, yes I would try to get hi, in before you leave or at least call and get your doctors advice. Is he lethargic at all? Diarrhea? If there's no other symptoms other than temp and runny nose then I doubt it's the flu. My son didn't have any other symptoms either and they swabbed him for the flu and he didn't have it. I hope he's feeling better soon!

Seems like just a common flu bug to me. But I would see if you could get him in just to make sure. I would. Esp since you are going to a area that you are unfamiliar with...You are his mom you know best follow you gut on everything.
