What would attract flies to a wall?

The external entry to my house attracts flies. Not little ones, but big black ones. Heaps of them. Think Ammytiville Horror. They never try to enter the house when I open the door, they just seem to eat the walls. I can't see anything on the walls that would attract them, they appear the same as every other external wall of the house, but it is the only place they go. The garbage bins are around the other side of the house.

We have only lived here for 3 months so I don't know how long it has been a problem, it seemed they appeared as soon as the weather warmed (southern hemisphere). Bug sprays work temporarily. I really want to get rid of them, so I need to know whats bringing them so I can figure out how to change it so they don't come.

Update:

It is the sunny side of the house, but the entry is ALWAYS in shade

Is it the sunny side of the house? Seems like flies and ladybugs swarm to the sunny side of the house this time of the year. There is not a whole lot you can do for that except spray them.
