Is my Betta fish a guy or a girl?
I think it's a guy because the fins are so long, but I want to be sure. Please tell me how you know if you know. Thanks :)

Also, any tips for taking care of her/him would be much appreciated, my friend just gave her/him to me last night with no instruction :P

The males are usually more vibrant in color and have super long tail fins. The females tend to lack luster and are somewhat dull looking plus they have short tail fins.
As for keeping him happy, you should get a small aerated tank with some pebbles and a nice light enough to keep the water a steady temp. Although the Betta's can live in just a bowl, adding air and plants to his tank will prolong his life span. The typical lifespan of a betta is approximately 2 years. I had mine for about 6 years using the set-up I just mentioned.

I have had several Betta fish before and this is a male. The females had much smaller tails.
You can buy Betta fish food at Petsmart or basically anywhere that has pet supplies. Remember to clean the tank at least twice a month with a clean sponge (and take the Betta out into a temporary tank while cleaning). Don't use cleaners that aren't labeled for aquarium use.
Good luck with your little friend!

looks like a male
1. 5 gallon aquarium
2. 78-82 degrees, heater needed
3. Places to hide and explore (driftwood/ plants)
4. Feed 3 pellets daily and a freeze dried bloodworm once a week as a treat
5. Do not put two bettas together! Not even a female!
6. Do 25% water changes once a week.
7. Light filter (sponge filter is best)

It is a male betta.
If you want to have a healthy happy betta try these tips.
-do not house any other fish with your betta!!!!!
-get a tank at least 2.5 gallons
-the water tempreature should be at about 75-82 degrees farenhight
-add a small current filter
-feed it a variety of foods such as, bloodworms, brineshrimp, pellets
It would also be great to add some live plants which I saw you pit bamboo in there :) but you might want to get a bigger tank!!!!

This is a male fish. They have longer fins and are generally more beautiful, to attract he female when mating.
You need to have food for him, and i use aqua one betta pellets. Betta fish do not need to be fed as much as other fish. You will need a little tank. They do not like big spaces, but bigger than the bag. You will need pebbles to something to make as the base of your tank and of course any decorations you want. Try not to fill it up with decorations, but having 1 is good. You will also need water conditioner for when you clean the tank. Tap water cant do too much har, if any, but it is safer to put in a conditioner. I have aqua one betta conditioner. It will say on the bottle how much you put in per litre.
Have them near light, they like natural sunlight :) You can buy lights and heaters for the cold, but mine have survived very long times without them. The sun does a good job. ;) I clean my tanks once a week, i put my fish in a little cup with its own tank water and a little bit of tap water in the cup as well. Wash your pebbles well each time. I got a bag of colourful pebbles when i first got my betta, but it was too much for the tank, so i split it in 2, and always have the other half washed and ready for the next time. It is recommended that you rinse down and clean any decorations as well. To wash you pebbles and decoration, you just use water. No soaps or anything like that. I wash the inside plastic and outside of my tank as well, just a clean damp cloth does a good job. Fill it up when it is all clean and put back together, and use the right amount of conditioner to set the water right. I use a plastic spoon after putting the conditioner in just ton mix it around a bit. Then you pour your betta back in. :)
They are really good fish, and pretty too ;)
Have fun! Hope it helped :)

it's a male betta
male bettas has longer fins than a females, also they have a gill beard. female bettas hasn't got long fins, and less colorful than male bettas. usually female bettas look more rounder than a male when they are in breeding condition and has a white egg spot on her butt.
Bettas need :
at least 4-5Gallon tank with a filter ( which will not be strong) and heater ( which should be set on 26C ) , also their fish tank need a hood as they can jump.
their fish tank needs to be cycle (re-search about cycle process) , also their fish tank water which comes from the tap should be conditioned used water conditioner every time you do water changes.
clean the fish tank only once a week, 30-40% fish tank water. never ever clean the fish tank fully. clean the fish tank filter in the bucket where will be old fish tank water and do not clean the filtration system under the tap water as the tap water kills beneficial bacteria
Betta fish are carnivore , they only eat meaty foods such as blood worms, shrimps etc. you can get off the petstore a frozen blood worms, dry blood worms, live blood worms, blood worm pellets etc.
feed your betta these every once a day as much as he can eat in few minutes.
remove any uneaten live food after few minutes to avoid the overfeeding the betta also left over fish food can affect the fish tank water quality by starting to rote. scoop out the left over food using a fish net.
Test your fish tank water check ammonia, nitrates and ph. you can test the fish tank water using liquid test kit or strip test kit for e.g. :
http://www.google.lt/imgres?q=ammonia+nitrates+aqu...
also you can try to take a sample of your fish tank water in the bottle to your local pet shop, they might test you for a small fee or even for free.
Good luck with your new betta fish, fallowing the proper care the betta fish will be healthy and happy and might live longer than 3 yrs ;). oh here is the shopping list for your betta fish tank
* betta 4-5 gallon starter kit tank with hood and light
* heater
* filter
* thermometer
* fish food
* fish net
* water conditioner
* decorations such as gravel/sand etc.
* water test kit , or just take a sample of your fish tank water to the shop
* a small syphon to help you clean the fish tank gravel
