Why don't liberals understand we could win the war on drugs if we just spent more money on it?

Oh good Lord. Here goes...

1.) "Smoking pot is a crime, and the liberal idea of legalizing a criminal activity is absurd. You can't legalize bank robbery so why legalize any other crime?" - Bank robbery is unarguably a harmful crime. Smoking pot in my living room, not bothering anyone shouldn't be a crime. When you criminalize things that shouldn't be crimes, then you're unfortunately creating criminals.

2.) "The reason we haven't won the war on drugs is because we haven't spent enough money on it." - Let me suggest you take a look at L.E.A.P. Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. It's a collection of police officers, lawyers, judges, etc., who've figured out that the war on drugs is a colossal waste of time and money. Most police officers didn't sign up to be busting pot smokers but to instead protect people from violent crimes.

3.) "Where can we get the money to win the war on drugs? Simple. Impose taxes on the 47% who pay no taxes at all!!" - Wow, when that came out, did you really believe that? Over 60% of the 47% are people who are still paying payroll taxes, because they're working hard, but don't make enough money to have to pay income taxes. The next largest chunk of the 47% are people who have retired. Are you suggesting then to tax them? They've paid their taxes.

Overall, you want to win the war on drugs? Quit fighting it with regards to marijuana, reschedule it on the drug chart, legalize it, and tax it.

I am highly conservative, but when it comes to this war on drugs.... I call B.S. drugs are just as plentiful as they were before we started this so called war. We have spent 15 billion on this war this year. And only god knows how much we spend to house all these criminals convicted of drug related crimes. Spending more money is not the answer. Most of the violence we experience in the US is directly attributed to some sort of illegal drugs and gangs. Make it legal, and we will have less crime. Ronald Reagan to me is one of the best presidents ever....and has gotten it right in so many ways, But got it wrong on this one.

Dude, you're an idiot. The war on drugs is impossible to win, just like the war on terror. Haven't u stupid republicans learned anything from the govt trying to rid the world of terrorism for the last 10 years? Idiots. People will always do drugs, it's not a crime unless they harm someone else. If I want to do drugs why can't I? Am I causing harm to anyone else? No. It's my life, shouldnt I have the right to do what I want? Portugal completely decriminalized all drugs and their drug abuse has gone down substantially. Why would we want to waste hard earned taxpayer money on something as arbitrary as intruding on what people do for pleasure? Who cares.

so you think putting potheads in prison to serve longer sentences would be a victory for "the war on drugs"? that's the least of this country's problems. don't you get it, the war on drugs wasn't designed to win. the biggest deadliest problems are prescription pills- they kill more people than all illegal drugs combined

We lost the war on drugs. Because the police used it as a excuse to turn peoples stomach. They lost to much support from those who would have helped them. Today you see a police officer and you lock your door. No amount of money can cure that.

In the Middle East... there is a death penalty in place for possessing even a small quantity of cannabis.

And people still smuggle drugs into those countries - and they have drug busts - and put people to death and sentence them to long prison terms...

Most people would think that is a draconian legal system - unless you want to rip a page out of sharia law... lets see... twenty lashes for possessing alcohol.
