The Republic collapsed under the weight of it becoming a large superpower. To rule the world it became an Empire, and Imperial Empire supported by foreign resources and exorbant taxes. People who were not Roman citizens were more heavily taxed, and if they fell behind in their taxes, they could end up as servants and slaves...
Rome was a patriarchal society. Women were in a sense viewed as a man's property. However,
Rome was still a vastly different culture than most people can imagine today. There was a lot more eroticism publically displayed, and there was certainly a lot more 'male eroticism' displayed. There
were no 'gays' and 'straits' inasmuch there were just open sexuality. Group sex and orgies were commonplace. There were different boundaries.
The problems were various, but I would tend to view overexpansion and militarism as the biggest underpinning problem. One simply built a huge empire that one could not financially save or militarily protect. In doing so the Romans became corrupt and diluted. What was once an army of loyal Roman soldiers became a kind of mixed foreign legion of people who needed money. Rome itself had a manpower shortage and it relied more and more on slabe labor and foreigners... In the transition from a Republic to an Imperial Empire there was a series of violen Civil War. Julius Caesar came to power,
but he in reality a viscious dictator who was on the verge of abolishing the Senate and representative govt. when he was finally assassinated.
Pompey the Great<the great Patrician defeated by Julius Casar>was perhaps the last chance for a true stronger Roman Republic...but in the wake of Julius Caesar there was a succession of leaders.
Some were brilliant and did much to expand and strengthen the Empire ie. Octavian who was better known as Augustus Caesar, Trajan, Marcus Aurillius, Hadrian, Claudius, Diocletian...but there was also a slew of monsters ie. Caligula, Tiberius, Nero, Commodus... None of these are in order, but most died via being mudered. So Rome became a highly militarized culture, overextended, impossible
to adequately police and protect, brutal to its conquored heavily taxed and enslaved foes, corrupt
in practically all its dealings.
Christianity was a refreshing tonic of a religion ie. it was simple to become a christian via baptism and a rebirth christening experience that allowed any woman or man to be 'sacred'. One did not have to view the emperor as a god, but all people could be viewed as children of god. It was a very urban religion, and was very good at delivering faith healing miracles... Early Christians were often executed for being 'athiests' ie. they were deemed people who had rejected real gods an the emperor...Christians became a kind of vast underground movement of revoluution and progressive cultural change. There is a strone resemblance to it with early socialist and Bolshevics in that Chstians were underground cells of revolutionaries who defied the class and social stratification of Rome.
There were various slave revolts ie. the most damous was the Spartacus revolt. Both Christians and slaves were crucified together and shared the common fate of daring to oppose the class system of Rome. Christianity became very popular; it was perceived as a merciful experience, and many people of the age very curious about the experienced of being baptized and cleansed of 'sins' and the unique process of becoming 'transformed.' The ruling class was often shocked by it ie. a woman would have her children taken from her. She would be a beautiful woman. She would be given a date of horrible execution in the Coloseum to be torn into pieces by lions. She would publically be offered the return of her children, the return of her honorable place in society, her freedom would be completely restored - if only she would state that the emperor was a god and that she was was wrong to be a christian. So often, these people would walk into the colosium and to the dismay of everyone, they allowed the lions to rip them to death. They were called fanatics...and many historians like Epictetus mentions them...but they had a reverse effect. People of all classes wondered how powerful and genuine such a religion or faith might be, if someone would die for it so easily.
Source(s): Finally Rome became christianized. Finally Rome became confederated into separate kingdoms. Finally Rome, when Britain called for help against barbarians, could not muster a responce. Finally Rome was sacked... New classes, and new Christianity emerged to takeover Rome. I think Byzantium was its last real gasp... I would even say Constantine was its last pillar of hope. - ?Lv 44 years ago
