Is a worn rack and pinion dangerous?

I have been losing power steering fluid and my mechanic told my my rack and pinion needed replaced. Is it dangerous NOT to replace it?

    Your power steering will eventually go out entirely and you could damage parts in the rack depending on how its set up.

    Will it kill you right now? No.

    Should you fix it? As soon as you can.

    As you lose fluid faster and faster because the seals are worn out, it will become harder and harder to steer the car. If you drive it long enough and the mechanical parts wear then the steering will fail in the future. Fix it as soon as is convenient.
