Great input from GMB and Josh, (thumbs up).
IMHO, I'd suggest you purchase shallow cranks and mid-depth cranks. For now, skip the deep cranks- if you start targeting bass in waters over 15-25FT you can easily switch to a Jig or Carolina rig.
(Deep crankin' in water over 15-25FT really requires a specific outfit and style.)
Here's a few suggestions. ALL my suggestions are for cranks that give you the "best bang for your buck". I'd love to sell you a Swamp Zombie Lure- but my retail price is $15-$25 - I think you want more than 2 lures! (lol) SO, here goes! :
#1. BPS, The Egg 3/4 OZ (Bone Shad and Gold Shad)- The blanks on these are very tough and compare to Manns 1-. Why the 3/4 OZ??? It casts a country mile! With 15LB-17LB Fluoro or Mono you can (should be able to) cast this lure a good 50-65 yards! And, as you know, the further the better for crankbait fishing. If you want this lure to "wake" use 17LB Mono- if you want this lure to dive to 1 1/2 FT use 15LB Fluoro. I've had excellent luck with these in crystal clear conditions. I like to use 15LB mono (main-line) with a 20LB 3 FT leader of Fluorocarbon. The only issues with this lure is the hooks are terrible- SO- you will have to change them. (I change almost all the hooks on my cranks anyway, so, that doesn't bother me)- http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-XPS-Lazer-Ey...
#2. Manns 1- 3/8 OZ (Craw, Fire-Tiger or Bone)- Old reliable! Burn this over the top of weedbeds. Best shallow crank you can own. Works great banging docks and on windy days when you need to get their attention- http://www.basspro.com/Mann&39;s-1Minus-Crankbaits...
#3. Storm, Wiggle Wart (Brown Scale Craw and Red Craw )- http://www.basspro.com/STORM-Original-Wiggle-Wart/...
#4. Luhr Jensen, 1/4 OZ Speed Trap - Great lure! I've caught tons of fish with these over the years! - http://www.basspro.com/Luhr-Jensen-Speed-Trap/prod...
#5. Bomber, Fat Free Shad- http://www.basspro.com/Bomber-Bill-Dance-Signature...
Hope this helps?

In my opinion, Bomber make the best crankbaits for the money. As for color, it isn't a one size fits all kind of thing. Your color selection needs to be based off of water clarity from day to day and lake to lake. Darker colors are best for murky water, lighter/natural colors are best for clear water and bright/vivid colors will be best for muddy water.
Also, you need to consider getting crankbaits designed for a few depths. Sometimes fish will be shallow, sometimes deep and sometimes suspended. You can find depth ratings on most of the packaging, but if not, the shorter the bill, the shallower the lure will dive.
