Problems opening external hard drive.?

Sorry if this is a re post, yahoo said an error happened.

I have a Samsung Hard Drive hooked up to a dock ( one that used to be a external CD Rom drive, but works fine with two other hard drives I have from other junk computer towers )

I Have a hard drive I am trying to see whats on it and when I hook it up nothing happens but a little thing pops on my Window screen-Computer-. It shows the Drive as Local Disk (E), but nothing else. When I click on it nothing happens except it tells me its busy ( status bar up top ). When I disconnect the USB cord from the computer or the drive, a message pops up saying I need to format disk. I dont know much much about computers, but I do know I need whats on the drive.

My lap top is Toshiba Satellite running windows 7 ( born with Vista ) and the drive is a Samsung Spin Point at 40 GIGS.

The drive came from a tower computer that was running something shy of Vista if not Vista.

I just want to know how Can I open this drive and explore it?

Simple & best way to get into the information on your Docking station will be to run this hard drive in Custom Mode which will be right mouse click onto the Hard drive & then you will see all the requirements to run this hard drive in Vista Custom mode & one warning for you make sure that it does not open as a C Drive as you said it's showing up as Disk E then you may be able to get at the information but do not be surprised if you have some software on that drive that will still run under windows 7 & you don't mention if your Windows 7 is 32 bit or 64-bit remember that Vista was only 32 bit be aware of that as it may help you & remember to make sure on the properties of the Hard Drive is on your computer as 32-bit otherwise it will throw a lot of stuff into your PC that may upset some settings, Finally checkout Microsoft Site before you connect it up again just to ensure you do not need to download any add-on which you may need to make this drive readable with Windows 7. Best Wishes.

This I/O error with no trouble implies that windows are not able to entry the hard drive for some rationale. Shut windows down. Disconnect the difficult force's USB cable out of your machine. Home windows. Let home windows relax. Then, making definite that the USB cable is plugged into the outside power, plug the USB cable back into your desktop (preferably in one more USB slot which is immediately connected to your desktop). The force must pop up. If it doesn't, ensure it's plugged into the mains properly. Let me recognize what occurs after this. We can go from there.
