R&P: Is gothic metal more popular among goths or metalheads?

Despite the term "Gothic Metal", the genre is more common amongst Metalheads.

If you go to a Gothic Metal gig, you will see that apart from the band, everyone else is dressed as a Metalhead and not a powdered freak doll dressed in black.

I would say it's split, actually. And mostly, it depends on the type of Goth/metalhead. Some Goths prefer more strictly traditional Gothic music, mainly in the realm of post-punk. Gothic metal is sometimes a bit more melodramatic than that, though, so some Goths I've met don't enjoy it too much. And of course there are the metalheads who dismiss the genre as not being heavy enough, but they shouldn't really be taken very seriously as far as I'm concerned.

I'd consider myself a metalhead who is very fond of Goth culture, and I enjoy Gothic metal quite a lot, but more on the death doom side than the stereotypical "ethereal, female fronted" kind.

I would say more metalheads as we prefer the traditional goth bands such as Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the banshees and the cure but if you ask me I personally love gothic metal bands. My favourites are Moonspell and Type O Negative. I've recently gotten in to Entwine and Charon and I liked Swallow The Sun even before I was goth.

I absolutely love Type O Negative and My Dying Bride (Not so much Paradise lost) I wear a lot of black, but I'm certainly not goth, I know someone else who likes those bands and he isn't either (And he listens to a lot of different metal)

From my experience, more metal heads and mall goths like the genre.

I do like a few Goth metal like Type O Negative and Paradise Lost but it's not a genre I dive into completely.

Gothic Metal is a sub genre of metal music. It's most common with metal heads and metal head mall goths.

I don't like gothic metal, it's to sappy for me. But I guess metalheads listen to gothic metal more

I think more metalheads...which is why it's a type of metal("gothic metal") instead of more gothic("metallic gothic rock" if such a thing exists)

Goths. I have never seen a Metalhead that listens to gothic metal.
