I heard the two items in the American flag truck was the bullet and the match. Why is that?

Some people have told me there is actually three. But i'm not sure. But anyways what is the purpose of these items? The only thing I could think of was to kill yourself and burn the flag. Is this true and where did this come from?

Also if it is for burning the flag. Is that disrespectful or an heroic act that you saved the flag from the enemy?

Has anyone ever cranked open a finial to see if these items are actually there or not? The whole thing seems pretty spurious to me, but then, I'm used to a tradition that holds you should go down with the flag still flying.

    Not quite Living the Dream.

There are 3 items in the truk of the flagpole, a razorblade, matches and a sidearm bullet, it would be a 9mm today. The razorblade is used to cut the stars out of the field of blue, to separate the red and white stripes from each other and the field of blue. Once the flag has been properly cut up, the matches are used to burn the flag, The bullet is for the remaining soldier to kill himself.

This process is used when a Division/Corps is surrendered and are refusing to surrender. The final remaining US soldier is to follow the procedure stated above.

And a razor. A razor to cut the flag cord to lower the flag easier, a match to burn the flag, and a bullet to either shoot the enemy or yourself so as to not be taken prisoner.

This would only be done in the event that a fort or camp was completely overrun by the enemy.

it's suppose to be a razor, a match, and a bullet...

Supposedly, when your base is taken over, you cut the stars away from the stripes on the flag and burn them together, and use the bullet on yourself so you can't be taken prisoner.

I'd rather shoot one more enemy and let them shoot me dead.

So your enemy can't have the flag as a war propaganda.

It's a myth. And one that doesn't make any sense.
