I want to go to Duke University... if you went there or know someone who did please help!?

I am a freshman in high school with dreams of going to a top university. Currently I have my heart set on Duke. I am currently in all advanced classes and plan on sticking with my schools most advanced classes (AP) all through my high school career. Please answer my questions!

1. How many extracurricular activities does Duke want? I am currently in marching band, concert band, junior national honor society (plan on graduating to regular honor society next year) and a community volunteer club. I am also hoping on volunteering monthly at my local hospital (I want a career in medicine) in the near future. Do I need more extracuriculars than this?

2. What are my chances of getting in if I follow this plan over the next for years? 4.0 student, in all advanced or AP classes, all extracuriculars listed above, four years of Spanish, a hopefully good score on SAT.

3. What else do I need to do over the next four years to make a good impression on Duke's administration board?

4. What is it like at Duke?

5. Any other advice?

Thanks so much!!!!!

these numbers may change slightly. the overall advice wont.

ecs are only looked at with students whose gpa and test scores they already like. they will not, with almost no exceptions, get you noticed on their own or compensate for low gpa or test scores.

you will want to aim for 2100 sat. that means doing your first one by fall/winter of junior year and planning your prep and retakes carefully. never take it more than 3 times and never without guaranteeing a score gain.

90% of their students were in the top 10% of their classes. do not take any adv/hon/ap class you dont realistically think you can get an A or a B in. if you estimate wrong on one, either immediately get a tutor or immediately bail for a lower class. do not just hope that studying more will be enough.

I did not go to Duke. But a family member and more than one friend was a faculty member there. And I know about college admissions.

1.There is no magic number of extracurriculars. It's better to have a few with meaningful involvement (and which are clearly significant to you) that a long list that makes it clear that few if any amunted to anything. Marching band is no big deal, concert band no big deal. Section leader/first chair, drum major, band captain, student conductor, more significant. Belong to honor society or volunteer club? No big deal. President, maybe a big deal. What did you do, why should anyone care? Volunteering every month, really not a big deal. Every week, maybe a little interesting.

2.If you pull that off, and your idea of a good SAT score is like mine, and you get 4s and 5s on AP tests, you should have an excellent chance of getting in.

3.First, learn enough about the process so you know who you have to make an impression on. And learn enough about Duke to be able to give a good answer to why you want to go there!

4.Nice campus, lots of serious studying and a quite a bit of partying. Helps if you like basketball.

5.Consider other schools as well. One of them might even be a better fit for you, who knows.
