core 2 duo has better clock speed but core 2 quad has 4 cores. Which one would be better for gaming.
Please dont suggest the i core processors as my motherboard only supports ddr2 ram memory.

It depends... 80 percent of games will run better on a higher-clocked dual-core. How much of a speed difference are you talking about? If you're just talking .3Ghz or less, take the quad, but if you're talking .6Ghz or more, take the duo.
Most game titles aren't coded to utilize more than 2 cores, so they run identically on dual-cores and quad-cores which have the same clock speed. The Core 2 Duo E8400 generally smokes slower quads like the Q6600 and E8300.

Battlefield 3 doesn't use more than two cores in single-player campaign mode, but benefits from a quad-core when running in multiplayer mode. However there's no further benefit going to a 6-core or 8-core CPU (AMD processors are weaker than Intel anyway)

Depends upon what the computer is used for as to whether a Duo or Quad provides the most value, but higher clockspeed is always better. Get the 2.66Ghz one. Since Core 2 Quads are more expensive, you can often get a FASTER Core 2 Duo for the same price. For example, the 3.0Ghz Core 2 Duo E8400 and 2.4Ghz Core 2 Quad Q6600 cost about the same. For gaming, the higher-clockspeed E8400 performs better. For multitasking, movie editing and 3d design programs the Q6600 is better. If the CPUS you're comparing have the same speed rating and you don't mind spending more, get the Quad. But never buy a slower quad for gaming. The CPU clockspeed is more important than whether it's duo or quad. The people who think multiplying clockspeed by the number of cores is how you calculate processor speed have no clue- ignore them, it does NOT work that way. **Update** The Q6700 is better than the Q6600 - it's 2.6Ghz instead of 2.4Ghz.

It depends on the game - not all games are coded to use more than 2 cores. Battlefield 3 is coded to use 6 cores but can still run on 2. If I was buying I'd still go for the quad core for future compatability.

the quad qore would be better, it is basically 2 core 2 duos, but the core 2 duo are still a decent cpu and if it has good enough clock speed it would do fine, so i would get the core 2 quad if you can but if the core 2 duo is fast enough it would be fine if you cannot get the quad, also a decent amount of ram is important and decent graphics card

go for intel core 2 duo sufficient ! gaming performance depends more on graphics card rather on processor and also RAM :)
using dual core processor for gaming and it didn't lag as of now !
also hard core gaming doesn't mean playing games at high resolution !
