Why does David Letterman always run across the stage when he is introduced?

He runs from left to right as he is introduced and then casually enters from the right. What's the deal with that?

Update:

I'm just thinking, if he really wanted to enter from the right, he could get over there 3 seconds earlier, so the running must be part of something.

    Mr. Letterman has indicated (source in NYC) that he will consider giving up the show if his show startup sprints fall below a set point- this is why he will check with Biff H. his results each time- at his current stamina and vigor level, this man should be on the air til at least 2016!

    He is a sweet eccentric guy, before his heart attack he used to be hyperrrrrrrrr. So running is a habit A question for the Ask Dave segment it seems. I wish he would do the human fridge magnet again now that was funny O_-
