What would be the definition of a break?

Okay, so I am just wondering. I have heard people who takes "breaks" in relationships. I have never understood that. My boyfriend, and I have kind of hit a rough patch in our relationship- he went off to college, and since then, he has been very stressed. We argued a couple of times, and he thinks a break would be good, because of the stress of college, and to see if our feelings are genuine.

I am confused. He said he still loves me, we are still together, and that we can have some contact, but that a break for a couple days, to a week would be good. What the hell is a break? I think it is a bunch of childish nonsense- because in my opinion, you are either together, or NOT together. He said it would be a mutual agreement.. So I am confused. Can anyone really tell me a good explanation of what a break is? Thanks.

Update:

@ Destinee- you have a very good point, but I am actually a guy. :)

Break means that he can go **** whoever he likes or has met in college without getting in trouble with you because you guys are on break and when he has had his share of fun he shall return to you after all of this. Stress is stress why would being away from you relieve the stress of college? This sounds like an excuse to me. If the feelings are genuine he would stay and work it out, being apart won't help none. Come on girl, deep down inside you know what "break" really means.

Edit: sorry lol well every MAN AND WOMEN :] my bad :3

Its the beginning of a break up! I don't believe in them. Often things aren't the same afterwards. He sounds unsure of things. now there's a difference if there were a serious stated break up with some length of separation and then u two decided u couldn't be without each other -- then sometimes become even better than before but this planned nonsense IS childish you're right. It makes no sense. Leave him alone

Just a cool off. Not officially a break up. But most of the time it ends up to break up tho. He just need a time and space between the two of u probably bcoz something is bothering him or he wants to realise something.
