    You could actually add 2x or subtract 4x first as it wouldn't really make a difference.

    To solve the equation:

    2x-2 = 4x+8

    ------ -------

    Add 2 to both sides!

    2x = 4x+10

    ---- --------

    Subtract 4x from both sides!

    -2x = 10

    ---- ----

    Divide by -2 from both sides!

    The final answer would be: x = -5

    There you go!^^

    Just to make sure, plug in -5 as the x-value in order to check yourself. If both sides equal the other, then the answer is correct!

    Try it:

    add 2x to both sides:

    2x - 2 + 2x = 4x + 8 + 2x

    --> collect like terms, now you have

    4x - 2 = 6x + 8 <-- you haven't gotten anywhere...

    ...try subtracting 4x from both sides

    2x - 2 - 4x = 4x + 8 - 4x

    --> now the 4x's cancel on the right, leaving

    -2x - 2 = 8

    --> now just solve for x...add 2 to both sides:

    -2x - 2 + 2 = 8 + 2

    --> -2 + 2 = 0...-2x + 0 = -2x

    -2x = 10

    --> now divide by -2

    -2x/-2 = 10/-2

    --> on the left, the -2's cancel, leaving only x

    x = -5

    ...or you could have subtracted 2x from both sides:

    2x - 2 - 2x = 4x + 8 - 2x

    -->

    -2 = 2x + 8

    --> subtract 8

    -2 - 8 = 2x + 8 - 8 --> -10 = 2x

    --> divide by 2

    -10/2 = 2x/2 --> 2's cancel, again, leaving x = -10/2 = -5 <-- same as what we got the "other" way.

    2x - 2 = 4x + 8

    2x - 2x - 2 = 4x - 2x + 8

    -2 = 2x + 8

    -2 - 8 = 2x + 8 - 8

    -10 = 2x

    -10/2 = 2x/2

    -5 = x

    You can do either way. It won't change your answer. I would suggest subtracting 2x first, to avoid working with negatives. You can do this first or add 2 first, it doesn't matter. If you wanted you could subtract 4x or subtract 8, but this way is slightly easier.

  • Just group the similar terms in one side of the equation. When you take a term to the other side of the equality, the sign changes.

    -2-8=4x-2x

    rearranging.

    2x=-10

    x=-5
