How many planets are there in the solar system?

I used to think it was 9, but there are these new things like Makemake and Ceres, so I just wassa know if these planets are officially now considered a part of the solar system or are they real at all? Thanks.

There are 8 official planets in the solar system, in the following order (from least to greatest distance from the Sun):

    - Mercury

    - Venus

    - Earth

    - Mars

    - Jupiter

    - Saturn

    - Uranus

    - Neptune

Pluto used to the the 9th planet, but it was considered too small in the last decade.

Ceres is considered the largest asteroid and only dwarf planet in the solar system.

Makemake is also a drawf planet and is 2/3 of the size of Pluto.

New? Ceres was discovered in 1801 and Makemake in 2005..... The International Astronomical Union voted to finally set an actual definition of planet though and also created the term dwarf planet. Pluto became a dwarf planet. So we have 8 planets and 5 dwarf planets. So 13 if you want to include them. But that was done in 2006 so hardly "new" either. But there are several other dwarf planet candidates too that are still being evaluated and it's estimated that there may be as many as 200 other dwarf planets in our solar system just waiting to be discovered.

There are several different definitions. Some include 13 planets and counting, some include as few as 4. 13 is one of the most commonly accepted, though. In order, it is

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, Eris

eight planets. Pluto, Makemake and Eris have different descriptions now, usually plutoids, sometimes dwarf planets. Ceres is a different sort of object, a large asteroid that has been referred to as a dwarf planet because of its size, it's a lot closer in then the plutoids.

    8. There used to be 9 when Pluto was still considered a planet. But some of these are dwarf planets and others are stars.

There are 8 planets in the solar system. There are also an unknown number of dwarf planets, plutoids, asteroids, comets, and kuyper belt objects.
