New hamster, any help please?
So yesterday i bought my myself a 8 week old boy hamster after loosing my hamster last year. I have never had a hamster that has been able to be held etc so im looking for advice. He lets me stoke him but occasionally has a nibble of my finger but i don't know when i should be trying to interact with him. Also is there anything else i can do for him to make sure he has a long and happy life.

he should have been left for 24 hrs to settle in. now you can start to interact with him. whenever you are in the same room as him, talk to him so he gets used to your voice. use treats such as small pieces of cabbage hand feed him these, once he is taking it from you without worrying about it, put your hand flat on the bottom of the cage and put the treat on your palm and allow him to climb onto your hand. once you are both comfortable with this use your hands to scoop him up. hold him firmly but not too tightly and sit on the floor (hamsters are scared of heights).
A hamster nugget food instead of a hamster muesli prevents your hamster from selective eating, i.e. picking out the bits he likes and leaving the bits he doesn't meaning he doesn't get all he needs from his diet.
Also be careful when feeding fresh food, the pieces don't need to be any larger that a finger nail and also don't give too much carrot or apple as they are very high in sugar.
Syrian hamsters are prone to wet tail, health check your hamster daily to make sure he is healthy.
I hope some of this information is useful to you

Ok, interact with him any time that he is awake and walking around. Make sure you get the more expensive hamster food just to make sure he has a long happy life. Don't use shavings, use carefresh soft bedding. Not many treats but lots of veggies and occasionally some fruit. The nibbling will stop once he knows you well.
